چکیده

Giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis; GCA) is a systemic vasculitis of medium and large arteries, affecting predominantly the aortic branches to the head and neck. Temporal arteritis was first described by Horton et al in 1932 and classically presents with a combination of polymyalgia rheumatica, headache, and manifestations of systemic illness (fever, anemia, anorexia, malaise, and weight loss). GCA usually occurs in the elderly with a mean age at diagnosis of 72 years. Patients with GCA seem to be at increased risk for cardiovascular events, with heightened rate of acute myocardial infarction, cerebral vascular attack, and peripheral vascular disease. Myocarditis and myopericarditis are not commonly documented in patients with GCA. In this report, we present a biopsy-proven GCA presenting with diplopia and new diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF) and myocarditis with left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Patient promptly responded to corticosteroid therapy further confirming the diagnosis of GCA.

Histopathologic Features of Giant Cell Arteritis in an Actinic Granuloma Lesion

The association between actinic granuloma and giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis) has been claimed by some authors. There is a hypothesis that actinic radiation has the principal role in the etiology of both diseases in a similar way. Here, we report a case of actinic granuloma that had characteristic pathologic features of giant cell arteritis in histopathologic examination without clini...

When giant cell myocarditis affects only the atria.

I n this issue of Circulation, Larsen et al 1 report a new variant of giant cell myocarditis (GCM) with lone involvement of the atria and preserved left ventricular function. The diagnosis was supported not only by histology but also by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging showing atrial dilatation and wall thickening with marked edema, sparing the ventricles. The isolated atrial involvement was ...

Assessment of P-wave indices as atrial fibrillation predictors in psoriasis patients

Background: Psoriasis is a prevalent chronic T cell mediated inflammatory skin disorder. Recent studies have reported an increase in the incidence of arrhythmia in psoriasis patients who run an excessive risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. P-wave dispersion (PWD) and duration are important electrocardiographic (ECG) markers employed to anticipate the risk of atrial arrhythmi...
